ever since I dyed my hair brown 2 years ago, people have questioned my ethnicity.  I've been confused with indian, puerto rican, and italian.
since then...i've layed off the tanning a bit.

my favorite experiences with this were both when we lived in the north end (a highly italian community). one little old man pinched my cheeks and told me that indeed, i was italian, at least from the nose up.  another little old lady that was missing all her teeth and talked like a parrot, got very frustrated when she told me i looked spanish and i told her i was from utah. "UTAR? whats utar? no. i mean, what language are you?!"

just for the record, I'm white. but coming from the land of utah could very much mean I'm a foreigner... at least to people on the east coast who don't even know utah is a state.

I think you're beautiful! I did not know you before you had brown hair...I tried to go dark once - NEVER again! Better off as a ditzy blonde! :)

I love the North End. It is all things Italy. We live near Boston now too so we love Mike's pastry whenever we make it there!

FUNNY!
I can SO relate. People are always asking my husband "what ARE you?"
He's heard all kinds of things too.
I actually blogged about it once...

No matter WHAT you are, you're BEAUTIFUL.

Haha, Kali that is funny. When I die my hair really dark, I have been mistaken for mexican. My father-in-law actually thought I was the first time I met him!

I was watching american idol last night and this really pretty girl with a high pitched weirdo voice.. was on there, she was italian.. kinda relates to the italian/parrot voiced lady.. :)

I bleach my hair blonde.. then it grows out.. and i get around to dying it again.. months later..

I married into a family of blonde boys and when Ty and I were engaged his grandma said to me..."it will be so nice to bread some color into this family." I, too, have brown hair.

Okay, this is your old aunt again. Here's an example of getting one's ethnicity totally questioned. Several years ago when your aunt Kathy and I were in Israel, everyone knew I was an American, but they thought Kathy was my hired Israeli guide. They kept speaking to her in Hebrew and me in English. Neither one of us could figure out why they thought she was Jewish. It's still a joke with us today. Your old auntie M.

i'm about 1/16th native american and although i never get my ethnicity questioned, my grandma gets stopped by the border patrol often in southern california.

ok. Isn't that annoying?! How can people not at least recognize all the state names? It just blows my mind.
Love Brown hair. I prefer my hair brown too:)

plus, it's cheaper than trying to be blond:)

Ha ha ha... Utar, huh?!? That's funny!

I haven't ever been mistaken for another race (that I know of) but I have sorta dyed my hair before. I've never done it at a salon, but it's been all sorts of different colors. Most of the time I used Kool-Aid for a temp. crazy color moment, but I did dye it once with some stuff from Hot Topic and it turned out a LOT pinker than I thought it would! :)

When I first started BYU my hair was brown and I said I was going to get really tan and join the multi-cultural club. Yeah. I'm that stupid.

I remember when you told me this story about the little old lady missing her teeth. I feel lucky to have gotten to hear it in person because I got all the sound effects too from the story!

Dyed my hair brown once and every hated it. Including me.

Love you dear! I miss my little Miles :(

my ethnicity allllways gets confused too!

I had someone ask me if I was from NYC because I talked fast. Don't understand that one. While in France we had two people mistake me and April for Swiss and German folk--and even Parisian! I couldn't believe it. I just feel like the average Albino ;)

P.S. Thanks for putting me on the side bar too! I just barely started your same thing yesterday, but I still need to get people to be on the same page ;)

As for why it's not letting you post comments... sad day! I have it so anyone can do it. Will you try it again and let me know if it works or not? Thanks!

since I don't tan very well and all that jazz I have never had my ethnicity questioned. and I have never dyed my hair. so I can relate in a not so much kind of way!

I'm not sure I have a connection to this except that you colored your hair dark and I used to color my hair blonde...but it was horendous so I colored it back to dark again. But, people never question whether I'm white or not because my skin color is ghostly.

my sister talked me into coloring my hair and it went "orange" so I colored it brown to cover it up.I told my self I'll never do that again then years later my daughter went to beauty school and needed someone to do colors on and she has been coloring my hair for the last five years... so don't say I'll never do that. And I love to tan and have brown skin just like wades....

Hum...The only way I can relate to this on is that I highlighted my hair blonder for a couple years. I got confused as a real blonde because I'm not the most coordinated person. :D

I started dying my hair in Jr high and went bleach blonde.. I hated how it would grow out and I would look like white trash... I rather be called all your things then white Trash.. I haven't dyed my hair since being called that!! Oh and tanning.. is amazing and so relaxing!

So, when I was younger my older brothers used to always tease me that I was a mexican until I cried. (They may or may not still tease me about this.) I'm not racist, but it still gets to me for some reason.
Also, I colored my hair dark when I first started cosmetology school, and all of my clients and even some of my classmates thought I was like 17. I'd never been told I looked older than 18 until I added blonde highlights two days ago. Now people think I look 27. Weird? yeah. Turns out I'm 24. But. whatever.

I am white and I will always be white. My ethnicity will never be questioned, ever...unless albino is an ethnicity.

My real name is Meliauna--Launi is just a nickname. So when I was growing up in Watts (LA suburb) every time we had a substitute calling roll, they would get to my name and say, "Mel...Meli...Meliaoo..."
I'd raise my hand. They were always expecting a Polynesian girl--not a white haired kid. Two different teachers said to me, "Put your hand down honey. I'm taking roll." I was probably marked absent because I was tooo white.

hmmm, this one was hard. The only thing I can think of was when I was very first born, I looked like an indian. Not so sure that really applies. Also, everyone thinks Jens baby is oriental. Like, even an oriental lady thought Shaylie was oriental.....

dymphna said...

that's funny....don't white girls have brown hair too?

I like your hair brown, it's beautiful! Love ya coz!

preston. shawnee. cohen. said...

ha, take that as a compliment though! Tan skin and dark hair is beautiful :) I think my hair has been every shade of brown and blonde... I can never decide which I like.

The Lang Family said...

People stop me all the time and ask if Shaylie is Asian... I don't see it but I guess Shaylie Lang sounds Chinese and people can just sense it.

You would make a georgous Italian!

*I've only been culturally confused when I tried to say something in German that I didn't really know how to say. I assume my grammar was so wrong that I was confused with being from Poland, not because of how I look but because of how the words sounded when they came out of my mouth.

I have never been mistaken for a different ethnicity. That's funny that you were. I have, however, told someone I was from Utah (I think we were in Florida at the time) and they looked at me like I was stupid. One lady even said, "Is that near the border?" People are so funny.
